TSA Vaping Rules: How to Travel with E-Cigs

Your bags are packed, your hotel is booked, you’ve taken time off work, everything’s ready to go for your awesome vacation! But wait…you want to bring your e-cig but don’t know TSA’s travel regulations….uh oh…

Don’t panic, the experts at South Beach Smoke are here to explain TSA’s rules and make sure you and your vape make the trip without a hitch!

TSA Vape Rules – TSA E Cig Regulations

If you’re flying with e cigs, you need to understand the general safety regulations the TSA has in place for vape devices. The biggest rule is: you CANNOT store a vape device in a checked bag but you CAN carry on vape devices in a bag or in your pocket.

This is because the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) prohibits the following devices in checked bags: battery-powered e-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

Therefore, just make sure to bring your device with you into the cabin. However, make sure to check with your particular airline for any additional e-cig device regulations.

TSA Vape Battery Rules

The TSA has safety regulations pertaining to different types of batteries. You can travel with dry batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D) in your carry-on or checked baggage. However, the (FAA) prohibits loose lithium batteries from being transported in checked baggage. Make sure to understand what type of battery your vaping device uses and plan accordingly.

Also note: both vaping and charging your battery on the plane is prohibited and very dangerous.

Traveling with Vape Cartridges & Vape Juice

As far as e-liquid and cartridges, there are additional flight rules to make note of. Passengers are allowed to carry up to 100ml of liquids such as e-juice bottles in carry-on bags. However, any liquid in a quantity highly than 100ml will have to be put inside checked baggage. Make sure to avoid using glass containers because they could be considered a hazard and could break — better safe than sorry!

Also note: federally controlled substances like cannabis products are prohibited on most US flights, so make sure your cartridges are federally legal.

How to Travel with E Cig Tips

These are South Beach Smoke’s tips on how to travel with your e-cig device and accessories:

First, if you’re using a refillable vape tank, empty it before flying. Cabin pressure inside the airplane can cause the e liquid in your vape tank to leak. Emptying your vape tank can prevent spillage. Also, try to bring partially used bottles and cartridges that have some empty space at the top to avoid pressure related issues.

Second, consider carrying e-juice with a higher nicotine strength than you usually use, so you don’t have to bring as much. Travelling lighter always makes vacations more fun!

Third, to keep your vape batteries safe, buy special battery cases. Some airlines require that all vape batteries be stored in a separate battery case. Having a case on hand can save you the trouble of having to throw your device away.
